PROSE (Handout 1)


Prose is


- A form of writing
- Not in poetry form
- Not in a drama form


It is A Form of writing composed by using paragraphs, instead of verses or dialogues like a play.


- It differs from poetry and play in the way it composed.
- Poetry uses verses or stanza.
- Drama uses dialogues
- Prose uses paragraph.



Based on the content, there are two
kinds of Prose;
1.Fictitious prose (Fictional Prose)Non Fictitious Prose (Non Fictional Prose)


2. Non Fictitious Prose (Non Fictional Prose)



1.Fictitious prose (Fictional Prose);
A.Short Story (1000 – 1500 words)
B.Novelet (1500 – 5000 words)
C.Novel ( More than 5000 words)
2.Non Fictitious Prose (Non Fictional Prose);
A.Text book
B.Scientific books (Journal, Research Report, etc.)
C.Biography or AutobiographyEtc.

Approach in Fiction Analysis
- Intrinsic Analysis
- Extrinsic Analysis


Intrinsic Analysis:
An analysis of a literary work in which the elements of the work are the focus of the analysis.
In another work the analysis studies, describes, explains or interpret the internal aspect of the literary work (fiction)


Ex.
- The soul depression of a wife portrayed in Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour.
- The analysis of symbols in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown



Extrinsic Analysis:
An analysis of a literary work (e.g. fiction) in which the focus of the analysis is not on the elements but on external factors or aspects like cultural background, the author, etc.


Ex.
- 'Aristocratic family life in the Southern U.S portrayed in A Rose for Emily’
-‘The way of life and thought of the European upper class as portrayed in the movie Titanic’.
